Chapter 12

“Oh shit!” Tyler reached out and grabbed his phone from the nightstand, glancing down at the time. “Fuck. Yeah. They’re definitely gone by now unless they completely changed their schedule.”

Aileen shook her head. “They didn’t. They’re gone. Although, honestly, I’m surprised that they didn’t come looking for me. Or at least call me.”

She picked up her phone and looked down at the screen. “Oh.” She laughed. “They did call me, actually. Jani and Chrissy, too.”

There were texts from both of her friends, and Aileen flicked her thumb across the screen to open the app. They were mostly what she had expected.

Where r u?

U r going to miss the bus.

Coach is going to b mad.

And from Chrissy, I told them u got another ride, but u better tell me ur okay.

Got distracted, Aileen sent back. Thanks 4 covering.

An instant later her phone buzzed with an incoming call, and she picked it up.

“Hey, Chrissy. Sorry I put you on the spot like that. I actually didn’t mean to miss the bus. It just kind of happened.”

“I know exactly how those ‘just kind of happened’ things happen,” Chrissy answered. “But I’ll let it slide this once, because I like you.”

Aileen laughed. “I guess I’m lucky I’m your friend and not your track rival or something, then.”

“You are, actually, because I’d kick your ass,” Chrissy shot back, a grin in the words. “But that’s beside the point. You’re good for now, so enjoy the time with your boy toy, and make sure you get back here for practice on Monday, because no one can cover you if you miss that without some kind of documented incurable illness.”

“I’ll find a way to get back. Thanks again, Chrissy. Really.”

“Sure thing, Aileen. See you Monday.”

“See you then.”

When she hung up Tyler was watching her, head propped up on one hand. “So?”

“So Chrissy told them I got another ride, and she’s going to keep covering for me, although I’m sure Jani has figured out what’s going on by now, but I’ve got to find my own way back to Gatica. And I’m going to have to get out of this hotel, too. I can’t afford to rent the room myself for the weekend. I should be able to find a bus that leaves tonight, though.”

“Or don’t,” Tyler offered. “Stay with me instead.”

For an instant, Aileen froze. It wasn’t that the offer was completely unexpected. If she’d thought about it for more than a minute she would have probably seen it coming, but she didn’t know what to do with it. If she took it, it would mean that they couldn’t keep pretending that nothing was going on between them. Because something definitely was. And staying the weekend meant that the something was almost definitely a relationship. But not staying would shut Tyler down. Maybe for good. He’d take it as a sign that she didn’t want to be with him at all. If Aileen was honest with herself, she had to admit that the idea of leaving when there was a way to stay wasn’t one that she liked.
